Research also suggests ‘self-injurious’ actions may be underdiagnosed
Palo Alto Online – Sep 28 2010

Doctors treating youths with eating disorders may be neglecting to diagnose accompanying self-injurious behavior such as cutting, a new Stanford University and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital study indicates.  Researchers found not only that 40.8 percent of eating-disorder patients in their study also practiced self-harm (most often through skin cutting and burning) but also that health-care providers may be neglecting to ask patients about self-injurious actions, indicating there may be a higher correlation between eating disorders and self-injurious behavior than previously realized.  Read More

Fiona Apple Develops Eating Disorder After Rape at Age 12
published Sept 2010 – Celebrities with Diseases.Com

Fiona Apple, an American singer and songwriter, has had her share of troubles suffering with eating disorders. Her lonely descent into depriving her body of food started after she was raped outside her home, when she was just twelve years old. Not surprisingly this had an extremely adverse impact on the young girl, and as a result she suffered from major depression and started to follow an erratic diet. She became extremely paranoid after the ordeal and also embarked on a desperate bid to lose weight. In her song Paper Bag she includes these words:

“Hunger hurts and I want him so bad, oh, it kills
‘Cause I know I’m a mess he don’t wanna clean up
I got to fold ’cause these hands are too shaky to hold
Hunger hurts but starvin’ works when it costs
Too much to love”

  1. Excellent information regarding patients that practice self-harm. Health care providers should ask clients about self-injurious actions. I have encountered this many times in my practice.

    Thanks for the reminder.
